MULTIPLES
Touring exhibition ‘Multiplication’ (2001-2004)examined the idea of a ‘lack of uniqueness’ with their multiple based artcollection. ‘The challenge.. is in finding ways of realizing an idea that canbe repeated time and again. Part of the creative challenge comes in researchingnew methods and sourcing new materials.’ This premise examines easilyreplicable or interchangeable ideas, and proposes an implicit creation processthat informs the value of the work. 2011-2012 exhibition ‘Multiplicity’ expandson the notion of multiples by introducing themes of sequences, and exhibitingwork with numerous parts. ‘Implicit in their exploration of multiplicity is achallenge to uniqueness and rarity as determinants of value.’ With thesenotions of uniformity and replication in mind I began examining themass-produced items I have collected throughout my life, now rendered partiallyunique due to their collective use whilst in my possession. Items such asschool exercise books; toy figurines; DVD players and receipts. These multiplesnow deter from their original form and essence- beginning as uniformlyproduced, replicated consumer items, and then altered by deterioration overtime or by their subjective applications. By manipulating these items undervarious implicit techniques or processes such as heat manipulation, pulping andreforming, or simple deconstruction these items have undergone a recycled,rejuvenate transformation rendering them back into simple multiples, indifferentiated form. These creative processes are often apparent and the worksoffer an observation of multiple formats, uniqueness, possession and value.
